State Rep. Kevin Miller | The Ohio House of Representatives
The Ohio House of Representatives has taken a significant step in addressing the issue of domestic violence by passing House Bill 111. Sponsored by State Reps. Jeff LaRe and Kevin Miller, the bill aims to raise the penalties for domestic violence offenders from a "low tier" third-degree felony to a "high tier" third-degree felony.
Under the current law, repeat domestic violence offenders charged with a third-degree felony face a sentencing range of 9-36 months. However, House Bill 111 seeks to reflect the gravity of repeat offenses by increasing the sentencing range to 12-60 months.
State Rep. Jeff LaRe expressed his belief that this legislation will contribute to the safety and well-being of Ohioans. He stated, "This bill is an active step forward in protecting Ohioans from domestic violence and ensuring offenders are punished for their actions. There is no doubt this legislation will make Ohio a safer and better place to live and flourish."
In addition to the increased penalties, House Bill 111 also introduces a presumption favoring a prison term for third-degree felony domestic violence offenses when the offender knew the victim was pregnant at the time of the violation. This provision aims to provide further protection for survivors of domestic abuse.
State Rep. Kevin Miller emphasized the importance of amending current laws to defend survivors of domestic violence. He stated, "Increasing the minimum sentencing range for repeat domestic violence offenders and favoring a prison term for offenders who knew their victim was pregnant actively works to protect victims of domestic violence."
With the passage of House Bill 111 in the Ohio House of Representatives, the legislation now moves to the Ohio Senate for consideration. This bill represents a collective effort to address the serious issue of domestic violence and ensure that offenders are held accountable for their actions.
Domestic violence is a pervasive problem that affects individuals and families across the country. The passage of this bill demonstrates Ohio's commitment to tackling this issue head-on and providing a safer environment for its residents.
